Los Angeles City Club Wedding + Disney Hall = Jenn & Minh

Jenn and Minh had their wedding and reception at the City Club in Los Angeles (333 S. Grand Avenue) on an absolutely perfect Saturday in June. It was absolutely my privilege and honor to work as their photographer. For some of the candid wedding portraits, we left the City Club and went over to the Disney Concert Hall (which is only a few blocks away). We began the day at the City Club in Los Angeles. It’s a fabulous venue with a great staff! Highly recommended!

The bridesmaid to Jenn’s right got married the following weekend. If only she had known about me sooner!

Jenn and Minh had a surprise highly choreographed dance routine for their first dance. They should try out for SYTYCD!

And they ended the first dance in a traditional way — with a dip and a kiss.

There were lots of single ladies in the house–some more enthusiastic than others!

And lots of single guys at the wedding as well!

One of the last photos I captured at Jenn & Minh’s wedding was this
black and white homage to traditional wedding portraits. Although I have
a "happy" version as well, I liked the manufactured stiffness of this moment.

LoftSEVEN Penthouse Wedding in Downtown Los Angeles | Genevieve + Jose

Genevieve and Jose’s wedding and reception were held at the LoftSEVEN Penthouse in the Haas Building on Seventh Street in downtown Los Angeles. Adding excitement to the day was the May Day Immigration Rally which took over that part of downtown earlier in the day. That being said, since Genevieve is an immigration attorney, we certainly wove that event into our photography. Gen with her father and sister.

Gen and Jose see each other for the first time on their wedding day. When I’m working with couples
who see each other before the ceremony, I always try to fashion a special moment.

I’m sure I have a photo of Jose dipping Gen and kissing her passionately … but this is a PG blog so I left it out.

I never include traditional portraits in my blog posts. That being said, here’s one to
appease the screaming masses who are always asking to see them.

The cool thing about this photo is Gen’s dad walking up the steps in the background.

I love photos like these as I hope they convey this history of the moment when viewed decades from now. For example, in the background we have an $8 price for parking, several types of cars, coin operated parking meters, and the logo for a fast food joint. How much will those things change in 10, 20, or 30 years?

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels + Union Station Wedding = Katy & Tony

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing Katy & Tony’s wedding at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles. The day started with Katy and Tony getting ready at the Los Angeles Downtown Marriott Hotel. Then we all went over to Union Station for some pre-ceremony wedding photography. After that, it was off to the Cathedral for the wedding and then back to Olvera Street and a short walk to Union Station for the reception. Katy and Tony had a Mariachi band that serenaded them from Olvera Street to Union Station. It was a fun walk!

Tony’s father sang a few ballads with the Mariachi band. And with a little encouragement, Tony joined in the fun!

I met Tricia and Tarik at Union Station for their engagement session. Tricia had arranged for special permits so we were allowed in to an area that’s normally off limits to the public. After we spent some time in Union Station, we drove over to the heart of downtown to visit the roof of Tricia’s brother’s residence. I must admit, he had a pretty amazing view!

The light can be really amazing in Union Station!

Downtown Los Angeles and Walt Disney Concert Hall | Katy and Tony

I met Katy and Tony for their engagement session last weekend in downtown Los Angeles at Pershing Square. I’ve worked as a wedding photographer a few times in that area, but I’ve not done an engagement session down there before. It was a bit chilly, but Katy and Tony were game for anything! After working in the heart of downtown, we moved to the Walt Disney Concert Hall (also in downtown Los Angeles).

See! I’m a photojournalist … well kinda.

This yellow wall makes me want to eat a lemon.

Katy had a special photo request. She wanted a photo with her, Tony,
